What does CAT A packaging for the safe transport of infectious substances mean?

The transport of infectious substances, whether Category A (UN2814) or Category B (UN3373), imposes strict requirements in terms of safety, certification and traceability. ISOVATION’s Category A (CAT A) packaging offers a regulated, robust and practical solution for biological transport in compliance with ADR, IATA and IMDG regulations.

Can these solutions be used to transport CAT B products?

These packages are designed to incorporate the triple packaging required for infectious substances, while guaranteeing double regulatory compatibility:

  • Category A (UN2814 / UN2900): pathogens dangerous to humans or animals, requiring packaging highly resistant to pressure and shock
  • Category B (UN3373): moderate-risk biological agents, transported in leakproof containers with absorbent and specific marking.

In fact, Category A approved packaging corresponds to the highest level of requirements. They can therefore be used to transport Category B products.

Our solutions combine the following elements:

  • Primary container: biojar or sealed tube
  • Secondary packaging: absorbent bag or rigid tube
  • Approved outer packaging: cardboard or UN-certified rigid container

What are the advantages of ISOVATION combination packs?

  • Versatility of use: a single kit to manage Category A or B shipments
  • Time-saving and compliant: no doubt about compliance with current standards
  • Reinforced protection: pressure resistance, sealing, secure wedging
  • Regulatory labelling included: UN3373, UN2814, ADR/IATA pictograms

Who uses Category A packaging?

These packages are designed for a wide range of players in the organic supply chain:

  • Medical and veterinary laboratories: transporting infectious samples or microbial strains
  • Hospitals and teaching hospitals: dispatch of critical samples to analysis platforms
  • Research institutes: shipment of high-risk cell or viral cultures
  • Pharmaceutical industries: clinical logistics and specialized diagnostics

Are Biojars reliable, leak-proof primary containers?

The biojar is a pressure-resistant, leak-proof primary container designed to guarantee sample integrity in the event of leakage, shock or temperature variation. It is often used as part of the regulatory triple packaging required for the transport of infectious substances.
Our biojars are available in a range of volumes and materials (PP, HDPE) to suit a variety of sample types: biological fluids, blood samples, infected tissues, etc.

Can we only order rigid containers for these packages?

For high pathogenic risks (Category A), we also offer to order only UN-certified containers, tested to strict IATA and ADR standards.

The containers are made of rigid plastic, with tamper-proof closures, verified tightness and compatibility with biojars.

These containers feature high mechanical strength, double locking and built-in absorbents.

Each container complies with the pressure (95 kPa), impact and temperature resistance criteria imposed by international regulations.

What are the main uses for Category A containers?

  • Transport of human or animal diagnostic samples
  • Sending bacterial or viral strains to specialized laboratories
  • Temperature-controlled transport of vaccines and biological materials
  • Emergency medical logistics (hospital samples, PCR analyses, etc.)
