A doggybag is a packaging solution that enables customers to take home uneaten leftovers from their meal. It can take the form of cardboard or plastic packaging, and can be flexible or rigid, as well as having isothermal properties. This type of packaging is extremely popular in Anglo-Saxon countries, where restaurant owners are accustomed to offering customers the option of taking their leftovers home with them. It’s also a solution used by caterers and restaurants offering take-away sales. It’s a service that’s extremely popular with customers.
Not all packaging is suitable for transporting hot or cold meals. The ideal packaging should take up as little space as possible for the restaurateur who has to store it, and be as efficient as possible for transporting foodstuffs. The isothermal box must be able to keep the meal warm for the entire duration of transport, regardless of external constraints (summer/winter). The ideal isothermal packaging should not be too heavy or cumbersome for the user. Last but not least, the doggy bag must also be able to be treated with common waste.

From July 1, 2021, restaurateurs are obliged to offer their customers containers to take away leftovers, known as “doggy bags” or “gourmet bags”. The Agriculture and Food Law was adopted by Parliament on October 2, 2018 and promulgated in the Journal Officiel on November 1. Beyond this regulatory obligation, restaurateurs must also be mindful of the effectiveness of the packaging they are going to offer their customers to ensure that the hot or cold meals they have prepared will arrive in their best state of preservation and presentation, and thus that their customer’s experience will not be impaired.
